Festival of Discovery isn’t simply a food or music festival – it is a celebration of South Carolina culture, local businesses, community, and the traditions that make Carolina barbecue unique.
What is the South Carolina Festival of Discovery?
South Carolina Festival of Discovery is an annual July community festival celebrating the state’s barbecue and blues heritage. Uptown Greenwood Development Corp. hosts the event with the support of local businesses and agencies.
Founded in 2000, the event was originally created to showcase Uptown Greenwood while highlighting the deep connection between Carolina barbecue and Southern blues music.
“When it was founded … it was to put Greenwood on the map,” Gibson says, adding it is designed to “showcase who we are and that rich tradition we have.”
For the 2026 Festival of Discovery July 9-11, the event includes:
- A Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) Championship and BBQ World Cup qualifier
- People’s Choice barbecue competition
- Live Blues Cruise featuring more than 100 performances
- Kids Que Competition
- Hot-dog eating competition
- Carnival rides

When is the South Carolina Festival of Discovery?
The South Carolina Festival of Discovery takes place each July, three days during the second weekend of the month. The 25th anniversary of the Festival of Discovery runs Thursday through Saturday, July 9-11, 2026.
“There are people that come every night,” Gibson says. “They just want to be in the activity and the ambiance.”
Mid-July always brings important weather considerations.
“It’s hot,” he says, “Famously hot.”
Come prepared with sunscreen, water, and comfortable shoes.
Where is South Carolina Festival of Discovery?
Festival of Discovery is in Uptown Greenwood, SC, in the city’s historic Main Street, 4-lane US Highway 25.
“We shut down our Main Street and establish a temporary campground with water and power,” Gibson says, adding nearly 100 competition barbecue teams fill the street while restaurants, shops, breweries and businesses become part of the festival experience.
“Our bars and restaurants are full to the brim,” he says and lodging accommodations around Greenwood County are often booked weeks in advance.

Set your wayfinder to 120 Main Street, Greenwood, SC, 29646. Festival directions are here. Be advised Greenwood implements a 3-day closure of Main Street / US 25. Barriers will close the roadway between Court Avenue and Seaboard Avenue starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9. Other side streets begin closing at 5:30 p.m. The road reopens Sunday, July 11 at noon.
Barbecue at South Carolina Festival of Discovery
For barbecue fans, this is the heart of the festival.
The Kansas City Barbecue Society Championship and Hash Cook-off attracts nearly 100 competition teams from across the nation. All seek a share of $25,000 in prize money, and the top 2 winners will qualify for the first-ever $1 million BBQ World Cup in Las Vegas in April 2027.
Smokin Sweetmeats collected the Grand Champion trophy and a $3,000 check in 2 of the past 3 years (2025 and 2023). Hot Cole’s BBQ won in 2024. Past Low & Slow Barbecue Show guest Adam Hughes and his team from Old Colony Smokehouse (Edenton) won in 2018.
Competition begins Friday with a pitmasters wing showdown and dessert battle. The wing showdown, dessert competition and South Carolina hash cook-off are non-sanctioned events, but deliver prize money to winners.
From there, attention turns toward the KCBS-sanctioned competition. First turn-in is Saturday at noon.
KCBS-certified judge Catherine Gaither, who has judged barbecue at Festival of Discovery for 24 years, shares insight into the barbecue judging process in this interview.

People’s Choice BBQ Award
One of the festival’s highlights is the People’s Choice competition. Instead of watching competitors and judges have all the foodie fun, visitors can sample barbecue and vote for their favorites.
Festival of Discovery People’s Choice Awards happens Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and if you want to participate, get involved early. Some competitors will run out of food.
People’s Choice barbecue samples are $5 for 5 samples and 1 vote, or $10 for 10 samples and two votes.
“You can definitely get full and have a meal for $5,” Gibson says.
Some competition teams participate in the People’s Choice Award in addition to other participating festival food vendors.
Festival of Discovery Kids Que competition
Young pitmasters fire up the smoker Friday and compete. Open to ages 6 to 15 with an adult chaperone on site. Competitor/team completes all preparation, cooking, and presentation. Adults only assist with safety and supervision.
Competitors prepare 6 samples and are provided 2 pounds of ground beef and 1 package of Carolina Pride bacon which must be used as signature ingredients. Competition is from 6-7:30 p.m. with champions presentation just before 8 p.m.
What to Expect at the South Carolina Festival of Discovery
Festival admission and admission for all blues music concerts is free. Concert venues are spread throughout town and include stages in the street.
Food vendors – including People’s Choice Award barbecue competitors – championship pitmasters, and other vendors fill city streets packed with spectators throughout the 3-day festival.
Live Blues Cruise Music Performances
The Blues Cruise features artists performing at stages and venues throughout uptown Greenwood.
Longtime music director Gary “Shrimp City Slim” Erwin, coordinates and schedules blues artists who rotate between indoor and outdoor stages.

Festival of Discovery Family Activities
Beyond barbecue and blues, Festival of Discovery offers fun for all ages.
Kid Zone: Rides for young festival-goers set up on Maxwell Avenue in the Uptown Market parking lot. Friday (5-10 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.-10 p.m.). Tickets: $1 each or $25 for 20. Ride the ferris wheel, flying saucer, loop, swing, spinner, fun house and inflatable slide.
Hot dog eating contest: South Carolina residents age 18+ compete Saturday, July 11, 12-1 p.m. at the Main Stage. Younger competitors require a waiver. First place award $500, second is $200 and third is $50.
Food vendors: An interactive map provides locations for 15+ food vendors. Find vendors near the Main Stage, Uptown Farmer’s Market, and Main and Maxwell to Oregon Avenue. Food options vary from barbecue to fair food, ice cream and sweet treats.

“Our businesses are very creative. They do a great job of [capitalizing] on the captive audience downtown.” Gibson says, adding during summer’s July dog days, business can sometimes slow. “A lot of times that’s when they’re doing trunk shows and bringing in vendors.”

This is my first festival. What do I need to know?
- Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated! There is limited shade, and South Carolina gets HOT in July.
- Reapply sunscreen every few hours and drink water continually.
- Enjoy the music.
- Pace yourself on BBQ. People tend to go big or go home – unnecessary!
- Participate in People’s Choice if you want a good sampling of BBQ from different vendors. Five to 10 tickets will fill you up. Saturday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (or until the vendors run out of food).
- Be patient and understanding of staff – they work LONG hours to make this festival a success.
- Don’t be a casualty of the heat! Please drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. When you start feeling unwell, it’s usually too late. Stay ahead of dehydration and take in water and electrolytes!
- For those who don’t like the heat or do not tolerate it well, visit during the evening when there is still plenty going on.
