What Is the World Food Championships?

Imagine a mash-up of March Madness and the most epic food competition you’ve ever seen – that’s the World Food Championships.

WFC brings together culinary experts from all over the world to battle it out for their share of a $450,000 prize purse. This year, competitors will show off their skills across 12 categories, including barbecue, burger, seafood, dessert, and even the newly added mixology category.

If you thought regular cooking shows were intense, WFC takes it to another level.

From sizzling grills to intricate desserts, the four-day event is a whirlwind of creativity, passion, and culinary craftsmanship.

“If you can’t stand the heat in the kitchen, this competition will test your mettle every step of the way,” says World Food Championships founder Mike McCloud.

How Does Judging Work for World Food Championships 2024?

The 2024 World Food Championships’ judging process is as unique and intense as the competition itself. Competitors must impress with Execution, Appearance, and Taste — three pillars of the WFC’s signature EAT methodology. But it doesn’t stop there.

WFC employs a three-layered judging process:

  • Blind Judging: Judges taste the food without knowing the chef behind it, ensuring objective scoring.
  • Master Judging: Seasoned culinary judges observe the cooking process, taking note of techniques and complexity.
  • Final Table: For the top competitors, there’s an additional live panel where they must present and defend their dish.

This multi-dimensional judging ensures that every dish, from ribs to soufflé, gets its fair shot at victory.

What is the World Food Championships Format?

The World Food Championship’s tournament structure keeps things exciting.

Competitors enter a double-elimination format, battling through rounds until the final stage – The Final Table – where the top contestants compete for a $150,000 grand prize. While contestants can bring their signature ingredients in earlier rounds, sponsors provide secret ingredients to the final round ensuring a level playing field.

For example, Tyson’s Cornish hens will be used in this year’s barbecue finals. The creativity chefs display when handling these sponsor-provided ingredients is one of the many reasons WFC stands out from other food competitions.

How Do Competitors Qualify?

The path to the World Food Championships isn’t easy.

To compete, participants must first win a Golden Ticket at one of over 800 qualifying events. Whether through a local barbecue competition or a food festival, earning a golden ticket is the first step toward glory.

For those dreaming of competing, there’s plenty of opportunity.

“It’s not just for the seasoned pros,” Mike McCloud says. “Backyard chefs with a knack for grilling or bakers who can whip up award-winning cakes can earn their spot on the WFC stage.”

From tailgate competitions to retail events, aspiring champions can find their golden ticket through a variety of pathways.

The History Behind World Food Championships

The World Food Championships began in 2012, but the idea was brewing long before that.

After spending years in the Kansas City Barbecue Society competitive barbecue circuit, Mike McCloud and his team realized that food sports deserved a Super Bowl. Since its inception, WFC has grown exponentially. IMG joined the partnership with World Food Championships to help scale the event to new heights.

From its Vegas debut to the 2024 home in Indianapolis, WFC has become a global phenomenon, attracting food lovers and competitors from 30 countries around the world.
